Registered Sex Offender Tried to Kidnap Girl at MIA: Police

A Miami homeless man who is a registered sex offender is facing new charges after police said he attempted to kidnap a 3-year-old girl at Miami International Airport.

Miami-Dade Police said Cuong Nguyen, 42, has been charged with attempted kidnapping and false imprisonment of a child under the age of 13. He's been ordered held on $500,000 bond.

It is not known if Nguyen has an attorney.

Police said the victim and her family had just flown into Miami International Airport from Argentina on Tuesday. The girl and her two siblings, ages 6 and 7, were walking toward a water fountain while their father followed behind.

The father told police that Nguyen appeared and grabbed the girl by the waist. The girl managed to free herself from his grasp and ran to her mother.

The father immediately told an officer, who detained Nguyen for an investigation. According to police, Nguyen admitted to taking the girl because he likes children.

When asked why he chose the girl, Nguyen told police that he thought she was cute and that he would kiss her.

Nguyen is a registered sex offender and was convicted in March of 1996 in Pinellas County.
