Residents of Troubled Liberty City Building Could Lose Power

Residents of a troubled Liberty City building said they've been told their power could be disconnected by Thursday.

Some residents of the Liberty City Apartments at 1231 Northwest 61st Street said they received a letter from Florida Power and Light notifying them that service to the entire building may be disconnected.

"Without the electricity I have to go to the emergency room immediately," resident David Brown said.

Brown lives in Apartment 4 at the building. He also got the letter from FP&L warning him the electricity to his apartment may be shut off for safety reasons.

Brown relies on his electric to power a wound vac to help heal on ongoing medical condition.

Other residents with medical conditions said they also worry what might happen Thursday if they don't have power for their equipment.

The feud is part of an ongoing problem between the city and the management and owner of the building, Miami Beverly LLC. NBC 6 first reported in January about the deplorable living conditions at the building, deemed unsafe and hazardous by city inspectors.

After NBC 6's stories exposed the problems, FP&L and the city inspected the building's meter room and found stolen and unsafe equipment. The city ordered the landlord to make repairs. A month later, the meter room still isn't up to code.

Several resident said the property manager told them permits to make the necessary repairs were applied for.
