Roof Collapses at Venice Strip Mall

Strong winds are believed to have ripped the roof off a strip mall building in southwest Florida on Friday.

Rescue crews responded after part of the roof collapsed at the Arc Plaza on Tamiami Trail in Venice, WFLA reported.

Footage showed sections of the roof collapsed or ripped off, with pieces laying on cars and in the parking lot.

Though an official cause hasn't been determined, strong storms were moving across Florida Friday morning and into the afternoon.

“After looking at pictures from the Venice damage, the roof damage appears to be all unidirectional which indicates straight line winds may have been the cause," National Weather Service meteorologist Robert Garcia said on the NWS chat room. "We had reports of 45 mph wind gusts in that area, so it makes sense to classify it as thunderstorm wind damage.”
