School Academies Named After King Carter, 6-Year-Old Shot and Killed in Miami

Two years after 6-year-old King Carter was killed walking to the store to buy some candy, two new academies have been named after him in Miami.

School officials opened the King Carter Global Trade and Logistics Academy inside Miami Northwestern and Central High schools Friday.

"Every day is a battle,” said Santonio Carter, King’s father. "It helps in a major way just to know my son was six years old when God called him home but his life is still living on."

Last year, an anonymous donor made a $1 million contribution to the school system in King Carter’s honor. The funds were used to create the academies to give kids real world business training into the classroom.

"It is meaningful to me,” said Superintendent Alberto Carvalho. "It’s turning a tragedy into triumph for kids in our community."

Carter was a student at Van E. Blanton Elementary School, who would’ve attended Northwestern or Central high schools.
