Sears Closing Store at Westfield Broward Mall After 40 Years: Report

What to Know

  • According to Business Insider, the location off University Drive and Broward Boulevard will be among at least 40 stores closing in 24 states
  • The closures have not formally been announced by the company yet.

Shoppers will soon have one less place to purchase clothes, appliances and even car tires at the Westfield Broward mall come this summer after Sears will be closing their location there.

According to Business Insider, the location off University Drive and Broward Boulevard will be among at least 40 stores in 24 states that will be shutting their doors in either July or August.

The closures have not formally been announced by the company yet. A spokesman for the company told the website that some employees would be eligible for severance packages or move to open positons at other stores.

The Plantation store is one of five locations in Florida reported to close and are in addition to over 160 other stores that were already slated to close this year. In total, Sears has gone from 1,980 stores five years ago to under 900 as of April.

Owners of Sears also are selling 16 locations during an online auction – none located in Florida – as well as reportedly closing 10 stores from co-owned Kmart, including one in Florida located just outside Tampa.

Sears was one of the three anchor stores when Broward Mall opened in 1978 and, at one point, was the biggest store at over 209,000 square feet. Plans were made to reduce that size this year to make room for restaurants and other stores.
