Security Guard, Gunman Injured in Murder-Suicide Attempt in Lauderhill: Police

A security guard and another man were in critical condition Monday after a murder-suicide attempt at a Lauderhill apartment complex, police said.

The shooting happened around 7 p.m. Sunday in the parking lot of the Royal Palm Apartments at 2900 Northwest 56th Avenue, Lauderhill Police said.

According to police, Emilce Salazar-Pupo, a long-time security guard at the complex, was making his rounds when he came into contact with the other man.

He questioned the man about whether he was a resident or visitor and a struggle ensued. The other man took Salazar-Pupo's firearm and shot him in the head, police said.

The man walked several feet away, sat down on the ground and shot himself in the head with the gun, police said.

When officers arrived, Salazar-Pupo was semi-conscious but unable to say what had happened. Both men were taken to Broward Health Medical Center in critical condition.

It's unknown who the other man is or why he was on the property. It's believed he has no ties to the Royal Palm Apartments.

Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
