Woman Sentenced to 2 Years in Prison in 2015 Fatal Hit-and-Run

A South Florida woman was sentenced to two years in prison in a fatal hit-and-run crash back in 2015 in Davie.

Alana Richter, 45, pled no contest in the Oct. 2015 killing of 25-year-old Leonel Dorta. She was sentenced Friday to two years in prison, 12 years probation, 10 years of a revoked license, 1,000 hours of community service and to write a letter of apology.

"I know that I made the wrong decision," Richter said in her sentencing Friday. "I should have stayed, and I was wrong for leaving.

Investigators said Dorta was walking near SR 84 in Davie after a family wedding when Ritchie, who was pregnant at the time, ran him down and kept on going.

New video shown in court shows a witness chasing her down to the gate of her community and confronting her. The witness told investigators after telling Richter she hit a person, she said, "I'm going to go back." She also told him, "Where did he come from?" and "I would never do such a thing."

Witnesses told investigators they saw Richter leave and drive back to her home after being told she hit someone. Her vehicle was later found at her residence with heavy front-end damage that was consistent with hitting a person, investigators said. She was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash and failing to report the accident or help render aid.

"I am devastated over his death," Richter said in court three years later. I had no intention to hurt anyone or be a part of an event where someone was hurt."

The victim's family believes Richter was drinking at the time of the crash, but she was never charged with DUI. Pictures of several empty cups were shown in court.
