Man Sentenced in MIA Bullet Primer Case

Mass. man gets 6 months in prison in airport incident

A Massachusetts man has been sentenced in Florida to six months in federal prison after admitting that he illegally transported bullet primers in luggage that ignited at Miami International Airport.

Under sentencing guidelines, 38-year-old Orville Braham of Boston could have gotten a much longer sentence. But U.S. District Judge Paul Huck on Tuesday gave Braham a break even has he called the incident extremely serious.

Travel was disrupted Dec. 28 in Miami when Braham's luggage containing some 1,700 bullet primers ignited. Braham was on a Miami stopover between Boston and Jamaica when the incident happened.

Braham pleaded guilty in February to illegal transport of explosive and hazardous materials. No one was injured.

Braham says he hid the primers in his luggage to keep them away from his small children.
