Several South Florida Schools Welcome Students Back For First Day of Classes Wednesday

While most students in South Florida are enjoying the final days of summer vacation, a couple schools in Broward County are welcoming kids back to classes on Wednesday.

Schools like Lake Forest Elementary in Pembroke Park and McNicol Middle School in Hollywood are among those that run on year-round calendars.

Whether you’re starting today or later this month, scheduled bedtimes are back…so how to you get your kids to get back into their sleeping routine?

Experts suggest practicing two weeks before school starts - but if you don’t have that kind of time, just start by making small changes to that bed time.

"By increments of 15 minutes. For example, tonight, 9:45 then the next night 9:30 and so on," pediatrician Dr. Ghazala Abuazza said.

Doctors recommend you do the same thing in the morning - wake up 15 minutes earlier or 30 if you're in a pinch to make this change quicker.

"We don't want to change this over the weekend,” said Abuazza. “It takes a few days for the internal clock to set it back, so it's better to keep it consistent throughout the weekend.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends ten to twelve hours of sleep for elementary and middle school students and eight to ten hours for high schoolers.
