Sherdavia Jenkins Gets Her Day at the Park

Monday would have been Sherdavia Jenkins' 13th birthday

Sherdavia Jenkins loved to play. All her family wanted was for the 9-year-old to have a safe place to frolic.

Now because of her senseless death, other children in Liberty City might ave that peaceful place to play.

The Sherdavia Jenkins Peace Park is located at the corner of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and NW 12th Avenue and was opened today in an emotional and rainy ceremony that paid tribute to the girl who died doing what she loved to do - play.

Jenkins, who would have turned 13 today, was caught in the cross fire between two men while she played with her baby dolls on her front porch in 2006. The man who allegedly fired the bullet that hit Jenkins, Damon Darling, was sentenced to 50 years in prison late last year.

"This means a change, change starts with us and then it spreads abroad," said Sherdavia's father, David Jenkins, at the opening ceremony.
