Three adults were shot in North Miami on Sunday after a fight broke out at a 2-year-old's birthday party.

The shootout happened on the 500 block of Northeast 143rd Street around 10:30 p.m. sending dozens of people running from the backyard of a home to evade the bullets. Small children were still in attendance when the gunfire occurred, police said.

Witnesses said a man entered the party from a back gate and opened fire on the crowd.

Police are still trying to figure out what may have triggered the violence at what usually is a peaceful, if not uneventful, celebration: a toddler's party.

The three people, 37-year-old Alfred Dorcely, 22-year-old Sphenda Nelson and Dwayne Politesse, 25, were all transported to the hospital. Politesse was the most seriously injured and is listed in critical condition.

Police are still searching for the gunman.
