Security Guard Shoots Would-Be Robber Outside Miami Market

An attempted robber was hospitalized after a security guard shot him outside a Miami grocery store early Thursday, officials said.

The incident happened at the Price Choice Food Market on Northeast 2nd Avenue.

Miami Police said the suspect, 25-year-old Dontre Hillery, was observed on surveillance video approaching the beer cooler and grabbing two drinks and putting them inside his socks.

As he was exiting the market, a manager asked him to take out what he had inside his socks. Hillery began to elude the manager.

Police said that's when the security guard stopped him. The guard removed the two cans from Hillery's socks and was attempting to continue checking him when Hillery fled the store.

The security guard took off after him. When they reached Miami Avenue and 17th Street, police said the two got into a physical altercation.

The guard told police he heard his holster unclip, and Hillery got his hand on the guard's gun. The guard said he removed the revolver from his holster, so it would not be taken.

While holding custody of Hillery in one hand, he had the revolver in the other hand and said he accidentally shot Hillery in the arm.

Hillery then fled the scene, but was later taken into custody. He was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital for his injuries and faces one count of petit theft.

The store's manager said the guard has worked there for three years. He added that it's against store policy for guards to confront thieves after they leave store property.

Police are still investigating the incident.
