Sinkhole Swallows Bus, Neighborhood Flooded

A water main break has brought life to a stand still on Miller Drive

A water main break has flooded an entire Southwest Miami-Dade neighborhood and opened up a sinkhole that nearly swallowed a school bus Tuesday afternoon.

The 48-inch underground pipe ruptured in the area of Southwest 124th Avenue and Miller Drive and spread across a wide area, flooding homes and nearby businesses.

An aerial view of the affected area also showed a farm underwater and horses walking in water that reached as high as their stomachs.

The sinkhole opened up at Miller Drive and 120th Avenue. Officials said there were no children on the school bus and the driver escaped with no injuries.

The road along a stretch of Miller Drive has been literally washed away by the gushing water from the pipe.

It's unclear what caused the pipe to burst, but the water has been turned off to the area. It should take between 24 and 48 hours to make repairs, The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department officials said

Traffic is being diverted to avoid the heavy flooding and residents are being asked to avoid the area.

Water pressure will be low in the area and the break could affect areas as far away as Doral and most of southern Miami-Dade.
