One Boater Dead, Five Hospitalized After Being Rescued in Waters Off Fort Lauderdale Beach

A call came in to 911 around 9 p.m. of a sinking vessel around two miles off shore

One person died and five others were hospitalized after being rescued late Wednesday night in the waters off Fort Lauderdale after their boat reportedly started taking on water.

A call came in to 911 around 10 p.m. of a sinking vessel around two miles off shore near Port Everglades. Rescue crews from the Coast Guard, Broward Sheriff’s Office and other agencies were sent by air and water to respond.

They were able to reach the boaters- with four being transported by Coast Guard and BSO while two more were found by the Coast Guard - and rushed them back to shore, where Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue took them to Broward General Hospital.

Officials gave CPR to one of the victims, but they died upon arrival at the hospital. None of the boaters have been identified.

Police continue to investigate what took place, while the boaters reportedly were in the water for close to 20 minutes before crews reached them in waters less than 100 feet deep.
