Slayed Transgender Woman Remembered as Loving, Confident

Friends and family of a transgender woman found dead at a Tampa Bay area park gathered to remember her as a loving, confident and happy person.

Mourners for 25-year-old India Clarke gathered Wednesday at University Area Community Park. Her body was discovered Tuesday morning near the park's basketball courts. She appeared to suffer from blunt-force trauma to the upper body.

Suzette Clarke told The Tampa Tribune that her cousin, born Samuel Elija Clarke, began dressing and identifying as a woman about four years ago.

Friend Mimi Redd told the Tampa Bay Times that Clarke's transition made her stronger because she was coming into herself.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate. Detectives didn't immediately have a motive for the fatal attack, and no arrests have been made.
