Son of Miami Beach Detectives Dies After Battling Rare Disease

The teenage son of two Miami Beach Police officers who fell into a coma last spring has died.

The department shared the news via Twitter Friday afternoon, offering their condolences to Detectives Christopher and Shantell Mitchell on the passing of their 18-year-old son, Dwayne.

Dwayne was a senior at G. Holmes Braddock High School. He was at his grandmother's house on May 16 last year when she found him unresponsive. He was rushed to Jackson South Hospital where they determined he'd gone into cardiac arrest.

It was later revealed that Dwayne had a viral infection and a rare heart disease called Wolff-Parkinson-White. The rare disease went undetected, as Dwayne was an extremely active high school athlete.

The teen was taken to a long-term health care facility where he received around-the-clock care, and was surrounded by family photos.

His parents remained by his side as the teen required life support at least 19 hours a day.

The family started the Dwayne Have a Heart foundation in their son's honor in order to spread awareness about Wolff-Parkinson-White, and to raise money to help others suffering from the condition.

The family also launched a GoFundMe page last year to help with the cost of Dwayne's medical care. They were able to raise more than $46,000 since the launch of the page last year.
