South Florida Flights Affected by Fire at Chicago FAA Facility

A dozen South Florida flights were affected after a fire at a Federal Aviation Administration facility in suburban Chicago caused a travel nightmare at O'Hare and Midway International Airports Friday.

At Miami International Airport, five Chicago flights were canceled and one was delayed. At Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, four flights were canceled and another two were delayed.

The incident prompted the cancellation of approximately 850 flights in and out of both Chicago airports.

Officials with the Aurora Fire Department said crews were called to the Chicago Air Route Traffic Control Center on West New Indian Trail Road after 5:45 a.m. Friday. The fire was quickly extinguished and a man found in the basement with an apparent self-inflicted, non-gunshot wound was hospitalized.

The incident is under investigation but authorities believe the fire was intentionally set.
