South Florida Tattoo Shops Being Extra Cautious After Ink Recall

Florida officials are warning people about contaminated tattoo ink made and distributed in South Florida.

They said the ink made by A Thousand Virgins Ink contains harmful bacteria. Shades G1, G2 and G3 have been recalled.

Officials said anyone receiving a tattoo is at risk for infection, but people with heart trouble, diabetes or have compromised immune systems are particularly susceptible.

If you have recently been tattooed, you're urged to seek medical care if you notice uncommon redness, swelling, itching, bumps or blemishes.

At HyperInk Studios in Fort Lauderdale, the owner is a well-known advocate for safe tattoo practices. He's shocked by this week's recall and he's now handing out flyers and reaching out to other artists, following the recent infection at another local shop.

"It’s definitely a concern and definitely something the public should be made aware of, especially the artists," said Santiago Gonzalez with HyperInk Studios.

State health officials said tests of the inks, made in Miami, contained bacterial contamination.

"It’s a contaminated ink and it's mainstream, so we're depending on the suppliers to do the right thing and give us the right products," Gonzalez said.

Health experts said contaminated inks are becoming more common on the black market, and can cause serious long-term health problems.

The owner of A Thousand Virgins Ink told NBC 6 the company recently moved locations after crooks vandalized and robbed its former headquarters in November. He believes the contamination came from a stolen batch of inks, and the company has halted production for the time being.

He also said Miami Police are still investigating the break-in.

For Gonzalez, the recall serves as another reminder to customers and artists to ask questions and double check their needles, inks and work spaces.

Before getting inked up, check for a state license or permit and ask to see the batch number and expiration date of your ink. Make sure your needles are disposable and single use.
