An official who oversaw thousands of roadway lights in Miami-Dade County has pleaded guilty to taking bribes from a lighting contractor.

George Brown pleaded guilty last week before a Fort Lauderdale federal judge to the bribery count. The 50-year-old Brown faces a maximum 10-year prison sentence.

Court records show that Brown accepted bribes worth more than $13,000 from the lighting contractor in 2011 and 2012 in exchange for using the contractor's products. The bribes took the form of merchandise including an air conditioning unit, a stainless steel refrigerator and a kitchen oven.

The contractor cooperated with the FBI and recorded some conversations with Brown, who oversaw about 24,000 roadway lights for the county's Department of Public Works.
