South Florida Organization Coordinating Relief Efforts for Haiti

More food, water and generators are on the way to Haiti nearly a month after Hurricane Matthew tore a deadly trail through the country.

In South Florida, Food for the Poor Executive Director Angel Aloma has been coordinating relief since the storm struck. The hurricane left hundreds dead and thousands homeless.

"There is an immediate need for food, for generators, for water purification systems, for blankets, for clothing." Aloma said.

On Tuesday morning, Coconut Creek-based Food for the Poor filled up two containers with fresh supplies bound for Haiti after having already shipped 68.

"Even chairs are going in here so that... if churches have been destroyed and schools and orphanages...have somewhere to at least be able to sit down." Aloma said.

Aloma says that what Haitians need most is solid, permanent housing. His organization plans to build a thousand new homes by the end of January and repair another 450 damaged ones.

"A thousand homes sound like a lot but there are many more people who are homeless in Haiti who will need homes after that." Aloma said.

For a nation still reeling from the 2010 earthquake and an ongoing Cholera outbreak, Aloma insists that even the smallest contribution will help ease the suffering.

Food for the Poor plans to finish 350 new homes by the end of this month.
