South Florida Teacher Honored by President Obama

A South Florida teacher has received a big honor from President Obama.

Carlos Montero, a former teacher at Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School in Miami-Dade, was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in mathematics and science.

Montero is one of more than 100 teachers nationwide to receive the honor.

Originally from Venezuela, Montero earned a degree in chemical engineering from Penn State University and a masters in Industrial Engineering from the University of Miami.

He started teaching chemistry at Krop Senior High in 2004 where he participated in the Modeling Methodology for Science instruction, which emphasizes a student-centered approach to teaching.

Montero went on to lead workshops on the method, and was named Miami-Dade County Science teacher of the year in 2008, also earning National Board Certification in Science.

He continued his teaching career at Nova Southeastern University's "U-School" in Davie.
