Southwest 8th Street Reopens to Motorists For First Time Since Deadly Bridge Collapse

What to Know

  • The school posted on Twitter that the entire roadway has reopened to motorists for the first time since the March 15th collapse.
  • A total of five people died in the rubble at the site where the bridge fell, while a construction worker died at the hospital

Just over one week after the tragic bridge collapse near the campus of Florida International University, drivers are now able to access all of Southwest 8th Street.

The school posted on Twitter that the entire roadway has reopened to motorists for the first time since the March 15th collapse that killed six people. Florida Highway Patrol officials previously told NBC 6 that the goal was to reopen the road by Sunday.

The entire span between 107th and 117th Avenues had been closed since the collapse.

A total of five people died in the rubble at the site where the 950 ton bridge fell shortly before 2 p.m., while a construction worker on the project was later taken to the hospital and died.

The pedestrian bridge was scheduled to open in early 2019 near the intersection of Southwest 8th Street and 109th Avenue as a way for people to cross the busy roadway safely – inspired in part by the death of a FIU student.
