Miami speed skater Eddy Alvarez failed to qualify for the 1,500-meter short track final Monday at the Winter Olympics in Sochi.
Alvarez was penalized after he knocked Italy's Yuri Confortola sideways during his semifinal race, knocking him out of contention for the final.
Canadian Charles Hamelin won the gold medal in the finals while China's Han Tianyu took silver and Russian Viktor Ahn won bronze.
Alvarez's teammate J.R. Celski, from Federal Way, Wash., finished fourth.
Shortly before the event, Alvarez took to Twitter to discuss his emotions heading into the race.
"I wake up this morning. Realize that I'm about to step on Olympic ice. Excuse me if you see some tears in my eyes once I am gliding around," Alvarez posted.
Alvarez will still compete in the 500-meter and 1,000-meter events.
