It was a quieter Monday on Miami Beach after large Spring Break crowds and a false report of a shooting over the weekend forced some streets and the MacArthur Causeway to be shut down and caused traffic nightmares.
Miami Beach Police closed a stretch of Ocean Drive Sunday to vehicles due to large crowds as part of their Spring Break safety plan. Footage showed people packed onto Ocean Drive for the second night in a row.
Some clubs, including Mangos and The Clevelander, closed their sidewalk cafes due to the crowds Saturday night.
Around the same time Saturday, police closed the eastbound lanes of MacArthur Causeway, due to large crowds and safety. The Causeway was later reopened.
Later Saturday, police said they received a hoax 911 call of a shooting in the 1000 block of West Avenue. Police said no one was found shot, but the incident caused some spring breakers to panic and cause a stampede.
"It was intense. There were way too many people here, too many young people looking to let loose," Mayor Dan Gelber said. "[It] stretched our public service assets to the limits, didn’t feel safe at all. Very worried about it but frankly got through the weekend."
