Sprint Signs Direct Cuba Roaming Agreement

Company CEO Marcleo Claure announced the deal Monday at a signing ceremony in Havana.

Sprint is now the first U.S. wireless carrier to sign a direct roaming agreement with Cuba.

Company CEO Marcleo Claure announced the deal Monday at a signing ceremony in Havana as part of the U.S.-Cuba Business Council delegation to Cuba. The carrier now has a direct roaming agreement and a direct long-distance interconnection agreement with the Telecommunications Company of Cuba (ETECSA).

Earlier in 2015, Sprint launched Sprint Global Roaming and Spring Open World, which provides connectivity in Canada, Mexico and much of Latin America.

“As the commercial relationship between the U.S. and Cuba continues to progress, it is expected that the number of travelers to Cuba will increase exponentially,” said Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure in a statement. “We want to make sure any Sprint customer traveling to Cuba can use their phone the same way as they do in the United States.”

It's estimated more than 3 million people from around the world will visit Cuba this year, with that number increasing to more than 5 million over the next 10 years.

Sprint has not yet announced details on timing and availability of the service.
