Student Injured in Shooting Near Middle School, 3 Arrested

Three teens have been arrested after a 13-year-old was shot Tuesday near Brownsville Middle School in Northwest Miami-Dade.

Eric Williams-Bell, 19, along with a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old, were arrested in connection to the shooting, police said.

Williams-Bell appeared in bond court Wednesday on attempted murder charges. He was ordered held without bail. The 17-year-old suspect also faced a judge in juvenile court. He was ordered to stay away from the victim once released from jail.

Police responded to the scene on 47th Street and 24th Avenue just before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Sources told NBC 6 the victim, Cedric Pernell, is a student at Brownsville Middle School.

"We were getting on the bus and then we heard two shots," said witness Amaya Dillard, who also attends the school.

Pernell was shot in the back and taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in stable condition, police said.

A white Mercedes 4-door sedan was seen fleeing the area at the time of the shooting. Officers tried to stop the car but the driver refused. Eventually, the driver lost control of the car and crashed on Northwest 56th Street and 7th Avenue, police said.

"The motive is still unknown at this time. Regardless of a reason a 13-year-old should not be in a hospital bed," said Miami-Dade Det. Marjorie Eloi.

The investigation is on-going.
