Student Stabbed at Piper High in Stable Condition, Suspect Charged with Attempted Murder

A 16-year-old who was stabbed three times by a schoolmate at a South Florida high school Thursday is "doing great" and recovering without any complications, his father said Friday.

Piper High School was put on lockdown after a senior stabbed a sophomore with a pocket knife in the school gymnasium, authorities said. The fight was apparently broke out after an argument over a basketball game.

The injured student, Urique Wilson, was transported to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale with a non-life threatening wounds. His father, Joseph Watson, said he was stabbed three times in the chest and back.

"He's doing okay right now at the moment, but right now they still got him up in the room right now so we're just waiting. God blessed everything that he's alive and didn't lose his life in this situation," said Watson.

The suspect, Kimanie Jumanee, also a student, is in the custody of the Sunrise Police Department and will be charged with attempted murder, according to police.

During a news conference, school officials described the stabbing as an isolated incident. The lockdown was lifted by midday and the school resumed normal operations.

"I wanted to assure them that the school is safe, you know, this is a very isolated incident. Piper is a great school as you know, last year it became an A rated school," said Robert Runcie, Superintendent Broward County Public Schools.

Just last week, one student was taken to the hospital with a head injury and another was arrested after a fight broke out in the school cafeteria.
