Students Learn the Dangers of Bullying

School shows movie about Bobby Kent, who was killed by friends for bullying them

A Broward school is hoping that students will get the picture about bullying by showing the effects on the bully.

More than a dozen at-risk students saw the other side of bullying Thursday when they learned the story of Bobby Kent, a Broward teen who was murdered in 1993 by seven teens he bullied.

"Seeing that outcome from bullying really shocked me actually," a 17-year-old student at AMI Kids said after watching a movie on the case.

During the "Anatomy of the Murder of a Bully" program, 16 students learned the impact a bully can have on the lives of those they torment, said Alexis Brimberry, education program coordinator for the school.

Local courts and police agencies use AMI Kids as a way to rehabilitate and teach at-risk youths, some of who might have used bully tactics to get in trouble. All the students at AMI are court-ordered to attend classes.

While Kent's story is an extreme response to bullying, AMI Kids wants to make sure history doesn't repeat itself. Kent was killed after seven friends said they had enough of his behavior.

"It was more about making the right choices because everyone's been through that  felt belittled at times or treated unfair," a 16-year-old student said. "Now, I look at bullying totally different when I see someone getting bullied. I wouldn't even look at it as bullying."
