Don Shula Expressway Reopens After Police Situation Ends

A tense situation in Miami-Dade has ended with a man described by police as suicidal being sent to the hospital after the incident shut down part of Sunset Drive and the Don Shula Expressway.

Traffic was shut down in both directions of the roads due to the man barricaded inside of a car near train tracks, the Miami-Dade Police Department said.

Traffic has resumed on the Don Shula Expressway. Heavy police presence remains on Sunset Drive.

The incident occurred near Sunset Drive between SW 88 Avenue and 92 Avenue close to an office complex.

"SR-874/Don Shula Expressway (North at Kendall Drive (SW 88 St.) & South at Bird Road (SW 40 St.) is closed," the MDPD said.

The MDPD said the man wanted to commit suicide. Video from the scene shows the man is inside of a black Toyota pickup truck.

Officers are attempted to negotiate with the man. The MDPD said the man is not a threat to anyone else.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital after the intervention of heavily armed police personnel.
