Miami Beach may have a reputation for sun, surf and sand, but a new study is associating the South Florida city with a new "S" word: STEM.

Livability.com has ranked Miami Beach as one of the best places for STEM careers, with jobs in medicine leading the way.

The acronym - which stands for science, technology, engineering and math - describes a multilayered academic approach that has gained traction in recent years. Miami Beach was ranked the 10th best city for STEM careers, with Huntsville, Ala. snagging the number one spot.

Miami Beach has made several strides toward improving STEM standing, according to the website. The coding bootcamp Wyncode Academy - which teaches computer programming during a nine-week course - is noted for "expand[ing] the STEM scene in Miami Beach."

The city's work with Florida Power & Light is also mentioned as a way of providing students with STEM education opportunities, including initiatives like robotics competitions and scholarship offers.

According to the findings, almost 13 percent of jobs in Miami Beach are STEM-related and the median salary is $80,000.
