Suspect Arrested in Man's 2017 Murder in Doral Hotel: Police

More than a year after a man was shot to death in a hotel while visiting South Florida, police say they've arrested the gunman responsible.

Akram Karriem Paul, 38, was booked into jail Wednesday on a second-degree murder charge in the March 21, 2017 killing of 25-year-old Theodore Brown in Doral, Miami-Dade Police said.

According to an arrest warrant, Brown was staying at the Courtyard by Marriott on Northwest 79th Avenue with coworkers from Maryland who were catering the Jazz in the Gardens event when he was found shot to death in a fourth floor hallway of the hotel.

Brown had arranged for a prostitute to meet him at the hotel, and she later arrived in a Jeep driven by Paul, the warrant said. Brown had also been seen with the same woman the night before, police said.

Paul later told investigators that the woman called him from the hotel room and he heard a commotion in the background, the warrant said. Paul said he armed himself and went into the hotel, where he encountered Brown.

Paul said he and Brown got into a fight, and Paul shot him in the chest, the warrant said. A coworker later found Brown's body.

Police said Paul later admitted to his involvement in the shooting, telling detectives he fled to Miami Beach, where he threw the gun in the ocean before fleeing to North Carolina, according to the warrant.

The prostitute told investigators there had been an argument with Brown over money, the warrant said.

Paul appeared in court Thursday where he was ordered held without bond. Attorney information wasn't available.
