Suspect Killed in Police-Involved Shooting in Lauderhill

The Broward Sheriff’s Office said a suspect was killed during a shooting involving Lauderhill Police Friday afternoon.

BSO said that detectives from the Lauderhill Police Department were investigating a stolen car at the Summit Palms Apartment in the area of NW 19th Street and NW 47th Avenue when the shooting happened.

BSO said when detectives tried to arrest Demaris Turner, 29, in a stolen Hyundai Genesis; he rammed a marked Lauderhill Police K-9 unit with both the officer and K-9 officer inside. BSO said a Lauderhill detective fired his gun, hitting Turner.

BSO said more than one shot was fired and that Turner was hit at least once.

Lauderhill Police began performing CPR until Lauderhill Fire Rescue arrived and took Turner to Broward Health Medical Center, where he later died. The K-9 officer was taken to a veterinary hospital and remains there Friday evening.

Residents said they were nervous about the neighborhood after the shooting.

"The environment has been a little rough because I see security guards at night and stuff. That kind of scares us and makes sure we’re protected and stuff. I just hope my family is okay,” resident Nizell Wilson said."

Turner was no stranger to law enforcement. He has been arrested numerous times over the years for charges ranging from battery on a law enforcement officer to aggravated battery on a pregnant woman and others.
