Suspect Injured in Police-Involved Shooting in Boynton Beach

A suspect was hospitalized following a police-involved shooting in Boynton Beach early Thursday morning.

The incident happened during a traffic stop in the 400 block of Northwest 1st Avenue around 2:30 a.m., Boynton Beach Police spokeswoman Stephanie Slater said.

According to Slater, officers had stopped a silver Honda Accord occupied by five black males in their late teens and early 20s when one of the suspects got out of the and tried to flee.

As he was fleeing, the man "brandished a handgun toward and officer," and the officer fired, Slater said. It's unknown whether the suspect fired his gun.

The suspect was taken to Delray Medical Center as a trauma alert. The officer wasn't injured. The suspect's gun and three shell casings were recovered, Slater said.

The officer will be placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
