Suspect Killed in Police-Involved Shooting in Wilton Manors

Police say they were forced to shoot a man armed with a gun in Wilton Manors Sunday.

Wilton Manors Police responded to a 911 call from a home in the area of Northwest 9th Terrace and Northwest 29th Street around 3 p.m.

According to investigators, the man's roommates told officers that he had a gun and was threatening to kill himself, kill them and kill any officer who arrived to help.

The man, later identified as 50-year-old Thomas Carberry, went outside and the roommates locked the doors but they could hear him firing shots outside, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.

When police arrived they encountered Carberry, who was holding the weapon, the BSO said. Carberry refused to drop the gun when ordered, and was shot by police.

Witnesses said they heard the man say "shoot me" more than once, the BSO said.

Carberry was taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where he died a few hours later.

The Broward Sheriff's Office is taking over the investigation.
