Suspect Shot Detectives' Car: Miami-Dade Police

A suspect was arrested after a shot was fired at an unmarked Miami-Dade Police car Wednesday night, officials said.

The shooting happened as detectives were driving the 2005 Chevy Impala in the area of 119th Street and 2nd Avenue in northwest Miami-Dade, officials said.

Miami-Dade police said the detectives were in the area looking for 29-year-old Edward Lamar Greggs who was wanted for an attempted murder that happened on Monday.

When they got to Greggs' home, they saw a vehicle drive away. As the detectives followed the vehicle, Greggs opened fire, police said. The bullet struck the passenger door, but none of the detectives were injured.

"Luckily the bullet hit the crossbar of the door, not allowing the bullet to go through," said detective Alvaro Zabaleta. "Even though it's one shot, thankfully so, for that crossbar, we could've had a another dead officer."

It's not clear if Greggs even knew the car was a police car as it's an unmarked, undercover vehicle. But he is now facing charges of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer because the bullet could have hit the undercover detective who was in the passenger seat.

"It only goes to show the dangers about doing undercover work... it's exciting... can be dangerous, can be deadly," Zabaleta said.

Police found and arrested Greggs in Miami Gardens and a firearm was recovered. And Zabaleta says he's lucky that he's not being held for murder because that one bullet could have killed the detective.

"It could've very easily struck him in the abdomen, struck him in the femoral artery, this could've been deadly. Fortunately it wasn't, but we could've been knocking on someone's door letting them know their loved one has passed away," he said.
