Man Shot in the Buttocks After Breaking Into Cop's Car

Suspect burglarized car at City of Miami cop's home: Police

A man is in custody after he was shot in the buttocks while trying to break into a City of Miami police officer's car and then led police on a manhunt, authorities say.

Well-known detective Confesor Gonzalez, who has been featured in the TV show 'The First 48', told investigators he confronted the man as he was breaking into Gonzalez' unmarked police vehicle in the detective's Pembroke Pines driveway.

The suspect opened fire and an off-duty Gonzalez shot back, hitting the suspect who fled on foot, police said.

After being wounded, the suspect led cops on an early morning manhunt in Pembroke Pines before being taken into custody.

The incident happened shortly before 4 a.m. in the Lakeside Key II neighborhood near Pembroke Road and Southwest 97th Avenue.

Witnesses told NBCMiami they heard between 15 and 20 gunshots ring out when the suspect opened fire.

The man is believed to be responsible for a rash of vehicle burglaries in the area over the last few months.

Officers spent hours searching for the suspect before he was taken into custody around 8 a.m., Pembroke Pines Police spokesman Bryan Davis said.

At one point, Miramar and Pembroke Pines Police were stopping vehicles in the area and a helicopter was searching overhead.

The unidentified suspect was taken from the scene in an ambulance to Memorial Regional Hospital with a gunshot wound in his buttocks. Gonzalez was not injured.

A firearm was recovered in the area where the suspect was arrested, police said.
