Suspect in Fatal Miami Beach Shooting Arrested: Police

Alan Michael Alt, 32, surrendered to police, authorities said

A man who was seen on surveillance footage firing a gunshot on Miami Beach before fatally shooting a man over the weekend has been arrested, police said.

Alan Michael Alt, 32, surrendered without incident to face charges in the Saturday night shooting that happened near Collins Avenue and 14th Street, Miami Beach Police said Thursday.

Detectives said the gunman had a confrontation with the victim before he fired his gun multiple times. Police didn't release the name of the 33-year-old victim.

Surveillance footage released Tuesday by police showed the suspect crossing the street at 11th Street and Ocean Drive and heading towards the seawall. Another camera captured the subject near the seawall at 13th Street firing a single shot before walking away. No injuries were reported in that shooting.

The suspect was then tracked towards 14th Street and Collins, where he fatally shot the victim, police said. He was last seen at the One Hotel near 23rd Street and Collins, where he was denied entry.

The motive for the shooting remains unknown.

"Right now unfortunately all we know is this was a very dangerous man. We’ve seen that on the video, we’ve seen that as the result of the loss of life," Miami Beach Police spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez said. "He came with his attorney today, unfortunately he declined to speak with our investigators. So a motive we may never know."

According to a statement from Alt's attorney, Alt said he was walking in an alley when he was suddenly attacked from behind by someone who he thought was pressing a knife into his back.

Alt said he was badly beaten and in fear for his life when he drew his firearm and opened fire, the statement read.

Police said Alt turned in a gun that investigators believe may have been used in the shooting. He is being charged with second-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm.
