Suspect in Shooting of Local Pregnant Woman Arrested in Cayman Islands

The Miami-Dade Police Department on Wednesday said the suspect accused of shooting a pregnant woman, whose baby died, has been arrested in the Cayman Islands.

Heidy Bowen was shot multiple times the morning of Nov. 3 in the area of NW 49th Street and 19th Avenue. A C-section was performed on Bowen, who was thought to be up to eight months in her pregnancy, after the shooting but the baby later died.

The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner ruled the baby's death a homicide.

Miami-Dade Police also confirmed that the woman later died from her injuries.

Wayne Collier, previously arrested for armed robbery and aggravated battery, was named as the suspect on the charge of attempted murder. Police confirmed Collier and Bowen were romantically involved prior to the shooting.

"I saw them grow up. They grew up with my children," Valerie Dukes, a longtime family friend, said in November. "Heidi was a good girl, you know. Her mom was a hard-working woman and she took good care of her kids so how this happened and why is beyond me."

Loop News in the Cayman Islands reports Collier was arrested by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service in the Prospect area.
