Suspects in Custody After Reported Chase Ends in Overtown

Miami Police are questioning five people who were in a car that led officers on a chase through the city Monday before crashing the car in Overtown.

“They tried to contain the vehicle, but these guys needed to take off. They were on the run,” said Sgt. Rene Pimentel of Miami Police.

The black Honda Accord in the chase was originally reported stolen early Monday morning near the intersection of NW 5th Street and 13th Avenue. The car was spotted Monday afternoon by Miami Police’s Robbery Tactical unit and that started the chase.

Police said the driver had four passengers inside the car during the chase. The suspect’s car ran into cars, people, and almost hit a bicyclist, according to Miami Police. The first attempt to stop the car failed. The driver of the car backed up and rammed a police unit and then sped off.

“When you see a chase of this magnitude, sometimes these guys don’t realize the danger they put themselves as well as the public and everyone else for something as ridiculous as this,” Pimentel said.

The chase eventually ended near the intersection of 3rd Avenue and 11th Street in Overtown. A total of three police vehicles and two civilian vehicles were involved in crashes related to the chase.

Miami Police took the driver and the passengers into custody and are questioning all of them.
