Hurricane Katia stayed on its path between Bermuda and the east coast as Tropical Storm Maria continued to speed through the Atlantic early Thursday, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Katia remained a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 85 mph as it moved north at 16 mph. It was located about 330 miles northwest of Bermuda, according to the 5 p.m. update from the NHC.

A tropical storm watch for Bermuda was discontinued.

Large swells from Katia will continue to effect much of the east coast, and the storm was expected to cause dangerous surf and rip current conditions.

Tropical Storm Maria, meanwhile, had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph as it moved west at 21 mph and was about 560 miles east of the Windward Islands.

Forecasters at the hurricane center said Maria is a system to watch, but it is still too early to tell what affect, if any, it may have on South Florida.

A tropical storm watch was in effect for Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat, Dominica, St. Barthelemy, St. Marteen, Guadeloupe, Martinique, St. Maartin, Saba, St. Eustatius and Nevis and St. Kitts. Little change in strength is expected in the next 48 hours.
