A sailor died in Afghanistan from injuries related to a dismounted Improvised explosive device blast, the Department of Defense said Tuesday.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael J. Brodsky, 33, died on July 21 while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. He was from Tamarac.

"He used to call me every week no matter where he was every week. 'Hi Pop, how you doing, what's happening," said Brodsky's grandfather, Stan.

Brodsky joined the Navy while in college, shortly after he graduated from Dillard High School.

"I thought he'd be in a ship all the time but his field was he trained bomb dogs, that's where they needed him and that's where they went," Stan Brodsky said.

Michael Brodsky died in the Kandahar Province. He was assigned to Navy Region Southwest Security Detachment in San Diego.

After ensuring his dog's safety in the Humvee, an improvised explosive device went off - amputating both of his legs.

"People are contacting us from all over the world that met Michael so you know he's my hero," said his father, Steve Brodsky, via Skype from South Carolina.

A Facebook page was also set up in memory of Brodsky.

Brodsky's grandfather told NBC6 he hopes he can bring part of Michael's cremated remains to the Star of David funeral home to be buried next to his grandmother.
