A teen accused of killing his friend in a crash on Key Biscayne was back behind bars after allegedly violating house arrest, as authorities released new video of the moments before the fatal crash.
The surveillance video released by the Miami-Dade State Attorney's office Tuesday shows the moments before they say Isaias Medina crashed a Porsche into a light pole along Crandon Boulevard and Harbor Drive on New Year's Day.
The passenger in the car, 18-year old Daniela Benavides Sanmiguel, died from the impact. Police arrested Medina, who was 17 when the crash happened, in February. He was initially charged as a juvenile but has been charged as an adult with vehicular homicide, driving without a license and reckless driving.
Detectives found Xanax and Marijuana at the scene and later toxicology tests showed Medina had both those drugs in his system, authorities said. But so far, he hasn't been charged with driving under the influence.
Medina had been on house arrest but on Monday he went back to jail. Prosecutors believe Medina was tampering with his ankle monitor, the GPS device that keeps track of his whereabouts.
Now, he has no bond and is waiting for his next court date. His attorney said in February that Medina, the son of a Venezuelan diplomat to the United States, is not a flight risk.
Medina is expected to attend a hearing Wednesday, and could be getting ready to take a plea deal. Otherwise, he'll be heading to trial.
