A Florida county has put a stop to all summer conditioning activities for high school athletes after a 14-year-old student died this week after collapsing during workouts.

NBC affiliate WFLA-TV said that Hezekiah Walters collapsed on Tuesday while working out with others teens at Middleton High School in Tampa. Walters was taken to an area hospital, where he passed away.

Tampa Police said Walters was among a group that had been working out for around a half an hour – workouts that included weightlifting, wind sprints and other activities – when he collapsed. Officials say water breaks were given during the workouts.

Wednesday, Hillsborough County Public Schools announced they were ceasing all activities in the county until coaches had reviewed safety procedures and a review was completed by all school staff members of students taking part to make sure they were medically cleared to participate.

Walters’ family released a statement saying they are “in shock” after the teen’s death.
