Teen Honored for Helping Killian High School Stabbing Victim

A teen was honored Thursday for her heroic actions after a fellow classmate was stabbed at Killian High School.

Arelys Jimenez was recognized by Miami-Dade Schools Police for her life-saving work at a ceremony Thursday morning.

Jimenez helped give first aid to 15-year-old sophomore Deandre Johnson after he was stabbed by a 17-year-old female classmate at the school on March 31.

"I don't even know what to say," Jimenez said.

The 19-year-old senior said she doesn't see what she did as a big deal or deserving of recognition, but police said otherwise.

"You do acts like this, you don't do it to get recognition but at the end of the day we have to recognize our students for the great work that they do, the great civil service that they do," Miami-Dade Schools Police Chief Ian Moffett said.

Jimenez had only recently learned how to give first aid. Johnson is still recovering from his injuries.
