Man in custody in shooting of teens that killed one, injured another

A South Florida man is behind bars after he opened fire on two teens in Lauderdale Lakes Tuesday, killing one and injuring the other, authorities said.

Elijah Ellington, 32, is facing murder and attempted murder charges in the shooting that happened shortly before 4 p.m. in the 4400 block of North State Road 7, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.

According to the BSO, Cornelius Mitchell and Bravon Newsome, both 17, were walking east on 44th Street when they encountered Ellington, who was walking west.

Something sparked a dispute between the three and Ellington pulled out a handgun and opened fire on the teens, the BSO said.

Mitchell was gravely injured and was taken by air to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Newsome, who was grazed by a bullet, was treated and released from the hospital.

Orange County OKs Deputies at Schools

Ellington, of Pembroke Pines, was being held without bond Wednesday, jail records showed. It was unknown whether he has an attorney.

Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and are asking anyone with information to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
