Teen on Bicycle Struck by Hit-and-Run Driver in the Hammocks

A Miami teen was struck by a car as she headed to school Monday morning and now police are searching for the driver.

The incident happened in the area of Southwest 152nd Avenue and 89th Terrace in the Hammocks as the girl was heading to Felix Varela Senior High School.

The 16-year-old girl was thrown from the bike as the car ran over it and fled the scene.

"He knew the bike was under the car and he kept going," Alexandra Luna said. "I thought it was messed up because I thought he was going to at least come out and help me but no, he just sped off and decided not to help and just try to get out of trouble."

Luna is expected to be okay. Her father, Kiangsis Paulino, said she hurt her leg in the incident.

"We're glad that she's okay and not dead but it could have been worse," Paulino said. "It's concerning that someone would actually drive off and just leave her on the side of the road."

Luna said the car was a silver Nissan, possibly a Sentra or Altima, and that she was able to get the license plate number. Police said they are investigating the incident and are searching for the car and the driver.

"They should have just stopped and seen if I was alright or not," Luna said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
