Thanksgiving Comes Early for Some in Miami

Thanksgiving may still be a week away, but for hundreds of families across Miami, Thursday was a day that they were thankful for the people in their community.

Nearly 500 families carried, wheeled out, or hauled away their thanksgiving turkeys at the Miami-Dade County auditorium. Commissioner Francis Suarez and dozens of other city employees took part in a the big turkey giveaway that for many families came just at the right time.

“We have a city that has a tremendously high level of poverty,” Suarez said. “Every time we do a food giveaway, we are bursting at the seams with people.”

Across town, Miami Marlins front office employees spent the day giving to nine community as part of the Miami Foundation’s day of giving.

“We have different groups out at Camillus House; we have a river cleanup, we have a beach cleanup, we have care packages that are getting sent out to the troops,” said Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill. “It’s Thanksgiving and we all have so much to be thankful for.”
