Thanksgiving Travel Begins in South Florida

South Florida's airports will be busier than normal over the next week or so as Thanksgiving travelers make their way through town.

Over the next eight days, more than 914,000 people are expected to take off or land at Miami International Airport. Another 500,000 are expected to fly through Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

The Thanksgiving travel week kicked off Monday, and travelers at MIA were making their way all over the map.

"Check in is light right now, I'm sure later on it'll get busy. That's why we decided to leave early," said Shirley Brantley, from Houston.

The Levan family was headed west to see relatives in California with one strategy in mind.

"Get there before the crowds, and come home after the crowds," Josie Levan said.

The busiest days at MIA are expected to be the Saturday, Sunday and Monday after the holiday.
