Three Suspects In Custody After Robbery, Car Chase In Miami Beach

All three suspects were in custody on Tuesday

Three suspects were arrested after a police chase ended with a crash near the intersection of Dade Boulevard and Michigan Avenue in Miami Beach.

Incident began when a German tourist decided on Monday to take photos of the beach with his iPad on Indian Creek Drive.

Authorities said Schnaider Fontilus, 24, knocked the tourist forward and then grabbed the tablet.

Fontilus started running, and the man ran after him, authorities said. The suspect got into a car, which had two other people in it, and fled, the incident report said. The two other suspects are Amiran Smith, 33, and Scott Kinler, 28, authorities said.

The car was spotted a short time later and police attempted to stop it. Smith and Kinler were taken into custody, but Fontilus jumped into the driver's seat and took off, police said.

After a chase with police, the car crashed into a light pole, then into another car and eventually rolled over, authorities said.

An eyewitness says the Chevy Tahoe was speeding when it made a left turn from Michigan Avenue onto Dade Boulevard and then crashed into a black Jeep.

"It smashed into the Jeep, spun around, and smashed into the barrier wall and flipped over," said Andrew Roe, who was working at a nearby construction site.

"He kicked the windshield in and started climbing out. It cut up his shoulders, climbing out. As soon as he got out, there were about 20 cops right on him," said Roe.

The man behind the wheel of the Jeep that was struck, escaped without a scratch. His car was rear-ended on the driver's side and had to be towed away.

Fontilus was taken into custody and transported to Ryder Trauma Center due to injuries he sustained.

The victim positively identified the car but didn't recognize the two suspects who had been in the car during the robbery.

The iPad was not recovered.

Schnaider faces charges including robbery strong ram, fleeing and eluding a police officer. Smith and Kinler each face charge of robbery strong arm. It wasn't immediately known if any of the three had attorneys.
