Toddler Struck and Killed By Car After Wandering From Key Largo Home

Authorities investigating after 2-year-old dies on U.S. 1

Authorities are investigating after a toddler who wandered from his Key Largo home was struck and killed by a car early Tuesday.

The parents of the 2-year-old called authorities just after midnight to report that their son was missing from their home on Sunset Boulevard, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

They said they had been looking for him for about 30 minutes after realizing he was missing, and all available deputies responded, along with officers from the Florida Highway Patrol and Customs and Border Protection.

After searching for 20 minutes, the child's body was found in the median on U.S. 1 at the 99 mile marker, the sheriff's office said.

Authorities later stopped a car at mile marker 23 whose driver said he thought he may have hit something at the 99 mile marker, the sheriff's office said.

The FHP and the sheriff's office are investigating the accident.
